The Importance of Community Service
If you choose to do community service instead of jail time after being sentenced to a level 3, 4, or 5 DWI, you will likely be ordered to do so through the courthouse community service office. There is a $250 community service fee, unless you do the community service before pleading to the DWI.
If you choose community service it is very important that you comply with your service on time, as a failure to do so could result in the court giving you a jail sentence.
Occasionally, if you have done community service on your own before coming to court, the judge may (but does not have to) give you credit for that. Any community service done before coming to court must be at a nonprofit organization, on the letterhead of that nonprofit organization, list the number of hours completed, and be signed by your supervisor at that nonprofit organization. Nonprofit organizations include, the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or a local church.
