Effective October 1, 2016, not only do drivers face penalties for unsafe driving that affects motorcycle operators, but drivers are now liable for penalties resulting from unsafe driving that affects a bicyclist. Any unsafe movement that causes a bicycle operator to change travel lanes or leave the road, results in a crash causing property damage or personal injury to a bicycle operator or passenger, and/or results in a crash causing property damage or more than $5,000 or serious bodily injury to a bicycle operator or passenger will face a fine ranging from $200-$750. In addition, an offending driver may face a possibility of four driver’s license points and a suspension of the their license for up to 30 days.
